Welcome
I am so glad you are in my class. We are going to have an awesome adventure this school year learning about government, citizenship, economics, and geography. Okay, we have a lot to cover this school year and the best way to make excellent grades is to show up and be prepared to learn something new each and every day. This course can prove to be difficult if one does not prepare themselves. Believe it or not, I am your cheerleader when it comes to the material we are going to cover. I believe in YOU!

Green Cove Springs Junior High
7th Grade Civics Syllabus 2016 – 2017 Course: 7th Grade Civics
Instructor: Michael Taft Class Room: Room #8
Mission Statement: Our mission at Green Cove Springs Junior High School is to create and maintain an environment where "EVERY STUDENT IS A WINNER IN SOME WAY, EVERY DAY" with parents and community as partners in the everyday function of our school. This will be evidenced by a mastery of skills essential to foster academic achievement and social responsibility. The school accepts this mission to create an environment, which will motivate all students toward these goals.
Course Curriculum: The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop multicultural understanding and use civics concepts and skills to actively seek information and systematically apply decision-making processes to real life situations. The students will be required to complete civics projects, seminars and class projects, write research reports, and take tests. Technology will be incorporated into every lesson.
Textbook: Florida Civics: Economics and Geography
Evaluation: Grades are determined by dividing the number of points a student earns by the total possible points. There will be an End of Course (EOC) at the end of the school year, administered by the State of Florida. This exam will count 30% of the student’s final grade.
Assignments are categorized as follows:
20% - Tests
40% - Class Work
20% - Quizzes
10% - Projects
10% Homework
CW/HW and Projects: All assignments are expected to be completed and submitted on the due date. Half credit may be earned if CW/HW is submitted one day late. Half credit does not apply to long term projects. Credit will NOT be given if an assignment is more than one day late.
Extra Credit assignments will NOT be offered. Extra credit is not needed when students wisely use their time and focus their attention on the assigned work.
Classroom Rules:
Be Prompt – Be on time for class. Honor due dates and deadlines.
Be Prepared – Bring required supplies and assignments to class.
Be Polite – Respect others and their property.
Important Policies and Procedures:
Rituals and Routines: At the beginning of each class, it is required for the students to open their Planner and write down assignments and information for the day. Students will be given Pop Planner tests to ensure that assignments/information is written down. Printouts and loose-leaf notebook paper will NOT be accepted for planner tests.
Absences: Students returning from an absence should check with a friend’s planner for missed assignments and information. If a handout was distributed, extra copies can be found on the front table. Every student will have three school days for every day absent to make up work. For the Policy on Makeup Work, please refer to the Student Planner.
Tests / Quizzes: There is No Talking whatsoever during tests or quizzes. If the student has a question or does not understand the instruction, they are to raise their hand and I will come to them. There will be no leniency with this policy. In high school, this rule is enforced and training the student now will better prepare them for the future.
